Shopping for Watermelons
Apply these three rules to pick the perfect watermelon: ensure no bruises, dents, or cuts; it should be heavy for its size; and it should have a yellowish spot to indicate it sat on the ground while ripening. If the watermelon is cold when purchased, keep it cold; otherwise, leave at room temperature, and wash the rind before cutting. Keep in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to a week or freeze and use in recipes that require frozen watermelon (it doesn’t thaw well).
Nutritional Info
Watermelons are very low-calorie, a rich source of Vitamin C, and contain decent amounts of Vitamins B5 and A (thanks to beta-carotene), copper, and potassium. They also contain B1, B2, B3, B6, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, and zinc. Watermelons have potential to trigger digestive problems in those so inclined.
Taste Profile
Beautifully ripe watermelon has an unmistakable fragrant aroma and indelible sweet taste. Its texture combines a slight crunch with succulent juiciness because of a 92% water content.
